Finally. [27 Sep 2007|02:11pm]
Wow. That was quick. I now have an honest-to-goodness job.

(And I use the word "quick" in the sense that the time span from application to accepting their offer was a mere week, not at all taking into account the fact that I've been hunting for a job since June.)

On Monday, I start work as a chemist in the organic department of Accutest, a company that does environmental testing for other companies/individuals/etc. On the one hand, I'll actually be able to support myself. On the other hand, I'll have to say goodbye to productivity and my daily walks in the woods. Why do we have to work to make money? I was having fun just working on testgame, reading music theory stuff, and playing KOTOR all day.

But seriously, I'm excited. I get to do lab work on decent-sized (i.e. not gigantic vat-sized) samples, mostly involving playing with instruments and learning the routine little bits at a time. And it actually has a purpose--we like knowing if the air/water/soil is contaminated. And I probably won't die. Plus, it'll hopefully only be for less than a year, assuming a graduate school takes me.

The end.

How I spent my summer vacation [31 Aug 2006|09:40pm]
So this summer, I made a dress. A nice, medieval, suitable-for-Cantatrix dress. I think it came out rather well. Pictures here. )

It's time for my yearly entry about how May Day is the coolest holiday ever. [01 May 2006|04:20pm]
Well, it is.

The formula was pretty much the same as last year, but this time I have a link to pictures. And news coverage.

On the news: http://www.nbc10.com/video/index.html
(OK, so the Swarthmore longsword group isn't in the video at all, and the news people don't really know what they're talking about, but it's still cool. And that could possibly be me huddled up on the ground in the distance.)

Pictures: http://www.sccs.swarthmore.edu/users/faculty/quale/albums/MayDay2006/MayDay2006.html

Hooraay for getting up at 4:15 in the morning to ensure we all get sunshine for another year. :)

What am I going to do?

For future reference:

Things you order from other libraries do not come when they say they will. Even though they claim transfer in 1-2 days, this is in no way true. Remember this the next time you want to get something in a week's time: just get it at Haverford while you're there, silly girl!

Oh dear.

Everyone say your goodbyes now, while you still can. For tomorrow, I go to get my wisdom teeth removed. Not fun. Somone please give my baby plants a good home.

(also, disregard the heavily swatties-lj induced wording. also, Brian Vanek. and such.)

May Day = best thing ever (well, something like that!) [01 May 2005|08:15am]
Ingredients:
-1 alarm to wake me up at 4:15 AM.
-1 shuttle with which to drive for half an hour and gather donuts and other assorted essentials.
-8 Swarthmore girls (plus or minus a few, and allowing for Bryn Mawr and Haverford substitutions) total with which to dance.
-1 very silly group of morris dancers, weilding their sticks and fearsome hankies, adorned with plenty of ribbons and bells, and consisting of 90% variously bearded happy old men and 10% young fledgling morris dancing boys with long hair.
-Enough longswords to go around.
-Garlands weilded by happy older women (forming a matching set with the happy old men, of course).
-1 field (or parking lot by a field, if it's too wet) in which to dance.
-Ample music (consisting of a concertina, a few fiddles, some random singers, and a huge drum played by an 8 year old red headed boy).
-The sun rising. Clouds and mist are optional, as are umbrellas.

Mix together as appropriate, and enjoy :)

The moral of the story is, I want a morris troup of my very own. They can live as a herd in my field and prance and caper around all day long, and then when people come over for tea parties on the lawn, they can admire my tamed herd of morris dancers :D

And I wish I had pictures! But alas, I am not cool like that.

And now, sleep :)

answers to unanswered questions.... or something [31 Mar 2005|06:35pm]
Hey guys, here are the songs you all missed from that meme thingy... (with bonus commentary by me!)

2. "When Barney Flew Over the Hills" - Relativity (random Celtic song I couldn't have expected anyone to know)
3. "Fragile" - Sting (this was totally all you, Mundee)
4. "Come here" - Lily Haydn (from Anywhere But Here... stripping scene anyone?)
7. "Hang 2gether" - 2gether (and no one got this one why? I guess the point of boy band songs is that they're lyrics all sound pretty much the same, but I tried to pick the most distictive part. ah well ;))
8. "Wild Child" - Enya (yeah... I totally wouldn't have gotten it either)
9. "We Go On" - by I have noooo idea, but they played it at the illuminations ceremony at Disney World...
12. "The Love That You've Been Looking For" - 98 Degrees (more boy band lyrics...)
14. "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" - Lion King (again, why didn't anyone know this?)
15. "Sometimes" - Nine Days
16. "Either Way" - Guster (wow... two relatively normal songs in a row? who knew.)
18. "Heather Graham" - DaVinci's Notebook (good song! but mostly just because of this one line)
19. "Eye to Eye" - from the Goofy Movie... really couldn't tell you who sings it.
22. "Reading You" - We're About 9 (yeah, this was yours, Heather)
24. The theme from Ghostbusters. whyyyy whyyyy? am I really the only one who listens to this song?!

the end. :)

wooo a meme! (stolen from Megan) [27 Mar 2005|09:29pm]
Haha, do I even have enough people reading my lj to make this work? We shall see!

Step 1: Get your playlist together, put it on random, and play!
Step 2: Pick your favorite lines from the first 25 songs that play!
Step 3: Post and let everyone you know guess what song the lines come from!
Step 4: Cross out the songs when someone guesses correctly!
(I skipped over instrumental music, and songs in languages that I can't understand...um, and songs where I just plain can't understand the lyrics)

everyone come play! )

I am now officially a music major. This means that if Chemistry decides that it hates me, at least I've got something else to do ;)

Haha, and this is the sort of use this livejournal is going to get. Don't argue.

The instructions:

Grab the nearest book.
Open the book to page 23.
Find the fifth sentence.
Post the text of the sentence in your journal, along with these instructions.

"The last magician was Mr Segundus."

Hmm...

(Text from Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, by Susanna Clarke)
